Press Release: The Tale of Hill Top – RHS Tatton 20-24 July 2016
2016 is 150 years since Beatrix Potter was born, and there are many celebrations going on all over the country. To mark Beatrix’s love of gardening and nature, the National Trust have teamed up with Garden Designer, Joanne Kennedy who is creating her first-ever Show Garden for RHS Tatton Park- ‘The Tale of Hill Top’.
Joanne Kennedy has been designing gardens for over 10 years, after gaining a Distinction in HNC in Garden Design at Pershore Horticultural College in 2006, and has worked with many clients to change their gardens. “I have designed urban and country gardens; back and front gardens; courtyards to large estates; contemporary or traditional. Garden Design is a second career to me – prior to this I worked for many years as a Project Manager in an Estates department within the Civil Service, working on projects of all sizes, so I have a lot of experience working with different contractors.”
“This is my first show garden so it’s all new and very exciting to me. My inspiration was up in the Lakes with friends – we were looking at the Lingholm Estate where Beatrix Potter holidayed, and of course, I’d visited Hill Top and had seen what a keen gardener and country lover Beatrix was. My Show garden will have a flower garden and a small vegetable plot split by a timber trellis and a wrought iron gate between the two. The flowers will be perennials reminiscent of Hill Top’s garden and will have old cottage style plants such as Nepeta, Alchemilla mollis, geraniums, phlox and holyhocks and ferns such as matteuccia struthopteris. In the small veg patch there will be carrots, radishes, rhubarb runner beans and lettuces – all of these feature in Beatrix’s Tales, and there will be some old gardening tools. I’ve met up with Pete Tasker, who’s been the National Trust’s Head gardener at Hill top for nearly 30 years and he’s been giving me lots of guidance – and inspiration”.
This is just one unique event that is taking place this year as part of the Lakes-wide celebrations for Beatrix Potter’s 150th Anniversary. Go to: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/thelakes and join in with #ThanksBeatrix and #Beatrix150
